ie the domain name, could cost you a fortune. The domain name is your website and email
address, for example www.intrinity.co.uk or info@intrinity.co.uk. A domain name is
a low cost item. In fact, you can buy them for a couple of quid a year. I fully appreciate, if
you have not purchased one previously, the idea can be a little daunting, which is why the
temptation to ask your web developer to do it for you often wins.
Where it can all go horribly wrong is if you fall out or lose contact with your developer.
What if they go bust? What if they retire? What if they leave the country? If you then find
yourself in the situation of wanting to upgrade your site, make amendments and so on but
you cannot or do not want to make contact with the developer, what do you do?
You are now potentially in a situation where you have a website that you have no control
over, a website that has disappeared and maybe even no email. Meanwhile, all the
business cards, stationery, adverts, vehicle livery and so on is promoting that very domain

• register the domain name yourself in your own account with a provider such as www.123-reg.co.uk

• make sure the domain name is registered to you or your company

That way, if the worse happens, you can get another provider for your website and email then point your domain name towards them instead. It really is no more difficult than filling in a few brief details and making a card payment.
